Division A Fall Contest

Division A of Toastmasters District 29, known as “The A Team”, held its Fall Contest on the morning of October 13, 2012 at the McCoart Building of the Prince William County Government Center.  Table Topics were offered in the first half, and Humorous Speeches in the second.  A sizable and enthusiastic crowd was on hand, including many District dignitaries.  Division A Governor Paul Chamberlin served ably as the contest host, and past District 27 Governor Vince Caldwell was Chief Judge for both contests.

In honor of both Columbus Day and the (88th) birthday of the Toastmasters movement, the theme of the contest was “Discover the New You”.  The Table Topic question, posed by Contest Master Jim Turner, reflected this theme - What have you discovered about yourself since joining Toastmasters?  Joe Jarzombek was the winner - among other discoveries, he met his wife Sharyn through Toastmasters.  Other speakers told of discovering their communication abilities - often just in time for an important business-related presentation.

The Humorous Speech contest featured four speeches drawing on four different slices of everyday life.  Ryan Kenick told of his frustrations in explaining his new job to border patrol officers in order to obtain a visa to come from Canada to the United States.  Ed Harrison based his speech on his young child’s behavior toward other shoppers in a supermarket check-out line.  Martha MacPhee told of the ongoing need for understanding each other to keep the peace in a marital relationship.  The winner, Annie Mickle, related her experiences in the Army Light Infantry that support that age-old military “rule” - never volunteer for anything!  Thanks go to Josh Murrell for his work as Contest Master for this contest.

The winners go on to compete at the District 29 Fall Conference.
